Founder Shanell Brown has always had a passion for justice and equity. With an Associate’s in Pre-Nursing degree from Pierce College, a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree from Seattle University, and currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Washington Bothell, Shanell has dedicated the majority of her adulthood studying healthcare with a trauma-informed and social justice lens. In combination with her education, Shanell has spent the last few years working in Maternal Child Health.

She has experience as a Nurse Home Visitor for first-time Black/African American pregnant birthing persons and a Nurse Consultant for Washington State’s Department of Health Perinatal Unit.

Early on in her career, Shanell recognized the health inequities Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) folx face, and in response, decided to dedicate her career to being a Reproductive Justice advocate. As a result, Shanell decided to found Shades of Divinity, a nonprofit that aims to provide social support to BIPOC families through scholarships and partnerships with local community-based organizations.
